The Truth Behind The Mosquito Magnet

Expecting summer? Then you might as well expect the crawling bugs and mosquitoes that come along with the season! Mosquito magnet, is therefore, a must-have in every household if you are to really enjoy your summer without the bites and buzzing. How does a mosquito magnet work? It works by trapping mosquitoes and other crawlies.

Mosquito traps work best when installed properly, placed in the correct location and using the right attractant chemical. If a trap doesn’t function as it should, the culprit is often the use of the wrong attractant or location of the device. It’s always best to install the trap upwind from the location where mosquitoes breed and exist. Plus, the chemical attractant must go with the species of mosquitoes you want to get rid of in the area.

Summertime means being outside for barbecues and other activities, but it also means the risk of getting bitten by mosquitos. With some areas of the state receiving heavy rainfall, an increased mosquito population is likely, said Barbara Ogg, a ...

What is it in these mosquito magnets that attracts and kills mosquitoes? If you already notice, there are some individuals that attract more mosquitoes than others do. Contrary to common belief, it is not the "sweet blood" of these individuals that draws mosquitoes but instead, it is factors such as bodily warmth, scent, and carbon dioxide.

Of all three factors, Carbon Dioxide is the best understood mosquito attractants. Even if an odor were unattractive to mosquitoes, a nearby carbon dioxide host would make it attractive to the insects. Studies have shown that the elimination of Carbon Dioxide from the human breath significantly reduced the attraction to the host. If mosquitoes are attracted to the source of odor, it will then be due to an olfactory response by the insect.

Mosquitoes have chemical sensory receptors on their antennae. These are what enable them to detect Carbon Dioxide. All mammals release Carbon Dioxide, including human beings. It isn’t only released through our breath, but through our skin as well. Mosquitoes can detect this from as far as 100 feet away. It’s as if the mosquitoes’ antennae were designed to follow Carbon Dioxide! Hence the invention of the mosquito trap was born.

With heavy rainfall in June and standing water, the mosquito population is already increasing along with concerns about West Nile virus. "We've seen a lot of mosquitoes, and it's going to continue." said Barbara Ogg, an Extension educator and entomologist in Lancaster County.

What the mosquito trap or magnet does is produce Carbon Dioxide via a catalytic converter. It then frees Carbon Dioxide, which draws in mosquitoes. When mosquitoes approach the device, a vacuum suction sucks in the bugs and traps them. With no escape these mosquitoes eventually die off in about 12 hours. With a mosquito trap, you no longer have a high risk of contracting diseases like Malaria and the West Nile Virus.

As a powerful attractant to mosquitoes, Carbon Dioxide is considered to be a long-range cue to the insect. Several brands of mosquito trap brands are already available today, the least popular of which has the shorter distance for attraction.

Don't expect too much too soon, though. Most mosquito magnets get noticeable results within one week. The best results usually take 4 to 6 weeks. This is because it takes time for mosquitoes to breed. The magnet attracts them as they come and as they thrive in your home. Once every little mosquito has been trapped though, you need not worry about another set appearing anytime soon.
