What is it in these mosquito magnets that attracts and kills mosquitoes? If you already notice, there are some individuals that attract more mosquitoes than others do. Contrary to common belief, it is not the "sweet blood" of these individuals that draws mosquitoes but instead, it is factors such as bodily warmth, scent, and carbon dioxide.
Carbon dioxide is considered the best understood of all mosquito attractants. When a host carbon dioxide is present, mosquitoes become activated towards it. And even when there is whole host odor that would have been otherwise unattractive on its own, the presence of a host Carbon Dioxide improves its attractiveness. It’s been found that the elimination of Carbon Dioxide from the human breath reduces attraction to the host. The attraction is simply due to an olfactory response.
Mosquitoes have chemical sensory receptors on their antennae. These are what enable them to detect Carbon Dioxide. All mammals release Carbon Dioxide, including human beings. It isn’t only released through our breath, but through our skin as well. Mosquitoes can detect this from as far as 100 feet away. It’s as if the mosquitoes’ antennae were designed to follow Carbon Dioxide! Hence the invention of the mosquito trap was born.

The mosquito magnet release Carbon Dioxide into the air - much like mammals and humans do - via a catalyctic converter. As soon as mosquitoes scents the Carbon Dioxide released, they are immediately drawn to it and suctioned and trap by the device, trapping them. Mosquitoes usually die within 12 hours without means of escaping from the trap. Your home, then, becomes safer from diseases such as Malaria and West Nile Virus which is brought about by the insect.
Carbon Dioxide is also considered a long-range chemical cue to mosquitoes. Therefore it is a powerful attractant used by several brands of mosquito traps today. The least understood cues are those used by mosquitoes to reach their hosts at shorter distances.
Don't expect too much too soon, though. Most mosquito magnets get noticeable results within one week. The best results usually take 4 to 6 weeks. This is because it takes time for mosquitoes to breed. The magnet attracts them as they come and as they thrive in your home. Once every little mosquito has been trapped though, you need not worry about another set appearing anytime soon.
